Abdrahman Mohammad Sherif
Abdurahman M. Sherif, a man of decision, an accountant, an instructor, and an artist known for his silk screen printing, never gave up in search of something new until he realized his heart’s desire. He was born on September 5, 1931, at Mercato’s Adere Sefer in Addis Ababa.
He started his artistic path by performing some illustration and design work while he was an accounting student at the Addis Abeba School of Commerce. Ever since he was a young child, the collection of paintings he saw at Mercato in Haji Yosef’s house has stuck in his memory.
When he entered the second year of his course and started to question his inner feelings, he realized that the accounting and secretary courses he was studying did not satisfy his true needs. So he understood that he could not continue in this situation. At that time, he was sent to Khartoum with three other young Ethiopians in a scholarship program to study as a chartered accountant under the first cultural agreement between the governments of Ethiopia and Sudan. He chose his own path and received a free education in an art school in the same city rather than attending the education for which he was sent to Khartoum. He enrolled there and began studying under the renowned Sudanese painter and African modernist Ibrahim El-Salahi.
He had to make his own decisions about the future once he got back from Khartoum. Although making this choice was difficult, he was adamant about it and fully confident that he would find a way to support his family whether he won or lost. He purchased a bicycle and set out for the countryside to explore the nearby forest while earning money to write and type a relative’s communication at home. He started doing drawings and numerous watercolor paintings while there.
When his father used to see Abdurahman sketching pictures in the street, he would tell him to stop, saying: “If your neighbors witnessed you acting in this manner on the streets, they would think you are insane. Please put an end to the street art.” Abduraman’s paintings were eventually accepted, and some galleries began purchasing them. He was motivated to meet Ale Felege, the founder and head of the Addis Ababa School of Fine Arts, by these watercolor paintings.
He began studying and teaching at the Addis Ababa School of Fine Arts in 1967. Emperor Haile Selassie I was due to pay a visit at the time, thus Mr. Alefelege assigned Abdurahman M. Sherif to paint the king’s portrait swiftly. Abdurahman then received further fortune when the king admired his charcoal method artwork. He received funding to study at the Kassel and Berlin art academies in Federal Germany from 1968 to 1970, where he received instruction in modern painting and graphic art.
Upon his arrival home, Ms. Mary Tadese, the then-Assistant Minister of the previous Ministry of Education and Fine Arts, asked him to work at the former Haile Selassie I Craft School. In this sense, he claimed that having the opportunity to acquire art teaching techniques at Kassel Art Academy had aided in his ability to instruct art at a similar institution. He later worked as the Addis Ababa School of Fine Arts’ director for over two decades and taught painting and graphic arts there from 1975 to 1991. He also served as the graphics department’s head and teacher for a number of years at the same institution.
Abdurahman M. Sherif has taken part in numerous individual and group exhibitions both domestically and internationally since 1971. He worked alongside six other Ethiopian painters, all of whom were instructors at the Addis Ababa School of Fine Arts, including himself, during the historic art exhibition held in 1971 at the former Emperor Haile Selassie I Theatre, now the National Theatre of Ethiopia. His highly developed visual creative skills have earned him several accolades both domestically and internationally. He is therefore considered as one of Ethiopia’s most renowned and esteemed modern and contemporary artists.

Abel Bedilu
Through my street photography, I aim to explore themes of anonymity, transience, and the passage of time. By capturing candid moments in urban settings, I focus on the ordinary aspects of life, elevating them to something extraordinary through the movement and energy of the crowds. The blur and abstraction present in my images reflect the fleeting nature of human existence, where moments pass by quickly, often without us fully realizing their significance. Emotionally, my work often evokes a sense of nostalgia and contemplation. I want the viewer to feel the rush and intensity of urban life, but also the quiet moments within that chaos—those small, unnoticed gestures that hold weight in everyday life. My photography is an attempt to pause time, to reflect on how we engage with our surroundings, and to consider how memories form and fade amid the constant motion of the city.

Achamyeleh Debela
I was born in 1949 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia in the Merkato neighborhood known as Teklai Biro. I have a rather vivid recollection of my childhood. I remember Yeneta Asdegdeg and fellow students Nunu, Buta, Tadele and Mengistu Jembere, Teshale and Gebeyehou Worsa, Taddess Wolde Giorgis, Eshete Gebeyehou, Tariku Biratu and many others with whom I had the privilege of spending part of my "kes temari bet" years. I remember staying a year behind school before going to the ferenje (inglise temari bet) because my father was working in Adigrat and later in Gondar as director of the post office.
The year I finished (Dawit Medgam) was spent with Degaga whom I have known as the shepherd who would collect cows from several houses along the road leading from Shawel Dema seffer all the way to Ras Hailu Meda. Degaga made certain conversation with the heard that steered them to smoothly fall in place as they came out of the various households in the neighborhood. I followed Degaga and his cows to Ras Hailu Meda and brought them back towards the end of the day to their owners. As a child I was fascinated how the cows knew when to come out on Degaga's approach and when to go back to their house when he brought them back. Between Degaga and some fond memories of learning soccer with (yecherk kwass) and playing kulf & later marble (beyi) with children who were hanging out as I was or those who skipped school, my time was somewhat occupied.

Addis Alem

Addis Gezehagn
Addis Gezehagn is known for his labour-intensive assemblage practice. It takes the artist many months to finalise each work. Methodically layering cut-outs from locally sourced magazines onto his canvases, the artist then applies acrylic paint to create his signature cityscapes. His canvases possess a kaleidoscopic quality, every centimetre of each painting different from the last. The effect is a dizzying landscape of colour variations and unique textures, created by the intentional cracking of the collage beneath.
From his Addis Ababa studio, Gezehagn reimagines the city he inhabits. The artist’s Floating City series details the topography of the Ethiopian capital’s cityscape, as if seen from a bird’s eye perspective. Gezehagn uses abstraction to create the illusion of three-dimensional sculptural space, and vertiginous views of urban centres yield to indistinguishable medlies of rooftops and window panes. Doorways now occupy the tops of homes, and entire buildings have been repositioned and deconstructed, reduced to ambiguous cubic forms. On closer inspection, more recognizable objects from the urban landscape begin to reveal themselves. A clothing line draped with laundry floats adrift, while corrugated iron roofs litter the canvas at sporadic intervals.
There is a tension that permeates Gezehagn’s work, as the artist subtly hints at the social consequences of the incessant desire to urbanise. While impoverished communities in Addis Ababa once lived in ground-level shacks, they are now being uprooted to reside in newly built highrise buildings. The organic interactions and social relations facilitated by their previous way of living have been replaced by a sense of impersonality, imposed by the coldness of these new dwellings. Gezehagn’s paintings are more than just a snapshot of the city – rather, they stand as a visual archive of what will soon be lost to the relentless pursuit of modernity.

Afewerk Tekle
Afewerk Tekle (22 October 1932 – 10 April 2012) was an Ethiopian artist, particularly known for his paintings on African and Christian themes as well as his stainedBorn in Ankober, in Shewa Province[2], to Feleketch Yamatawork and Tekle Mamo, Afewerk grew up under the Italian occupation during the Second World War. Following the war in 1947, Afewerk decided that he wanted to help rebuild Ethiopia and elected to travel to England to study mining engineering. Before departing, Afewerk, together with other students leaving to study overseas, was addressed by Emperor Haile Selassie. Afewerk recalls being told "you must work hard, and when you come back do not tell us what tall buildings you saw in Europe, or what wide streets they have, but make sure you return equipped with the skills and the mindset to rebuild Ethiopia".
Afewerk had already shown talent as an artist as a child, decorating several walls in his home town. Whilst at boarding school in England, this talent was recognised and encouraged by his teachers. As a result, Afewerk was persuaded to switch from engineering and enroll in Central School of Arts and Crafts in London. He then went on to the Slade School of Art where he studied painting, sculpture and architecture.Returning to Ethiopia as a university graduate, Afewerk could have accepted an assigned ministerial post, but instead decided to spend time travelling around the provinces of Ethiopia to get more experience of his native country and culture, which he reflected in his paintings. In 1954, he held his first one-man show in Addis Ababa, at Municipality Hall[2], that gave him the funds to travel around Europe for two years where he learnt how to design and construct stained glass windows. He also made a special study on Ethiopian illustrated manuscripts in the British Library, the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris and the Vatican Library.
Back in Ethiopia, Afewerk opened a studio in the National Library of Ethiopia. His growing recognition lead to government commissions for murals and mosaics in St George's Cathedral, Addis Ababa, and several of his designs were used on the national stamps. He was also commissioned to produce sculptures of famous Ethiopians, although only the monumental statue of Ras Makonnen in Harrar was completed. Most notably, in 1958 he designed the stained glass windows in the Africa Hall of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa in Addis Ababa. The three windows cover an area of 150 square meters, and represent the sorrow of Africa's past, the struggle of the present, and hope for Africa's future.
In 1961, Afewerk held a major retrospective in Addis Ababa, which led to his painting Maskal Flower being shown at international exhibitions in Russia, the United States and Senegal. Increasing funds allowed Afewerk to travel around the continent of Africa. With much of Africa still emerging from colonialism, Afewerk became fired with black emancipation and the struggles for independence. This is reflected in his paintings of this time, with titles like Backbones of African Civilization and African Unity In 1964, he became the first laureate of the Haile Selassie I Prize for Fine Arts. As his reputation spread abroad, Afewerk was invited to put on an exhibition in Moscow following which he toured the Soviet Union giving lectures. The American government responded with an invitation for one man exhibitions in Washington D.C. and New York and a similar lecture tour of American universities. Additional international exhibitions followed in Senegal, Turkey, Zaire, the United Arab Republic, Bulgaria, Munich, Kenya and Algeria.
Through much of the 1970s, Afewerk was engaged in producing murals and mosaics for many public and religious buildings around Ethiopia, including the mural Last Judgement in the Adigrat Cathedral in Adigrat, Tigray. In 1977, his painting Unity Triptych won the gold medal in the Algiers International Festival.
The early 1980s saw a second major exhibition in Moscow and an exhibition in Bonn. In 1981, his painting Self-portrait was the first work by an African artist to enter the permanent collection of the Uffizi Gallery, Florence, Italy.
In 1997, he exhibited at the Biennale of Aquitaine, France, winning first prize in the international competition. He was also nominated as the Laureate of the Biennale which gave him membership of the French International Academy of Arts.
Afewerk Tekle had membership of the Russian Academy of Arts, so he became the first African member in 1983

Cherinet Weldegebreal
As an artist, Cherinet Weldegebreal graduate of Alle School of fine arts and design, Addis Ababa University in 2004 specializing by Art education prioritizes ideas, "mulling them over before my brushes touch canvas." He believes the art of painting is a "grace-bestowed gift," and he is its "humble recipient, faithfully copying what is bestowed upon me."
Beyond the visual realm, he is also a recipient of the gift of poetry, "a treasure I truly relish." His poems traverse the spectrum of emotions, for therein lies the essence of poetic expression. "Serenity and turmoil coexist, both bearing inherent beauty." Through his paintings and poems, he manifests these convictions and sentiments, often "astonished" to find that certain works "appear detached from my own hand and pen," realizing he has "been blessed with inspiration."
His paintings, such as the renowned "Balageroch" series, "encapsulate truths, moments, joys, and hopes," serving as "a portrayal of both the present and a foreshadowing of the future." They are "born from the keen observations of the myriad beauties that grace my life’s journey."
The "Balageroch" series "simply captures the very essence of our nation, embodying the spirit of its people who are deeply connected to their homeland." These works, painted with the vibrant colors "passed down by our ancestors: green, yellow, and red," were created to "symbolize love, togetherness, and greatness." It is his "heartfelt desire that every Ethiopian finds unity under this shared banner and embraces it as a source of immense pride."
While his art is created from this profound spirit, He does not wish to confine the viewer's interpretation. "Art invites you to see it as it reveals itself to you, as you comprehend it." His work is an offering, a testament to the transformative power of divine grace and the deep-seated love of a balager for their flag and their homeland.

DAWIT ADNEW
Dawit Adnew's (b.1973) paintings conjure a sumptuous, dream-like idyll, where figures pose languorously in beautifully patterned dresses in gardens overflowing with luxuriant plants, flowers, and fruits. An atmosphere of perpetual calm prevails, a suggestion of twilight, where colour and pattern are sources of pure pleasure, as in Matisse or Gauguin. His practice is informed by studies in African masks and iconography, and his use of patterns and fabric emerges from his experience as a textile designer.
Dawit is based in Addis Ababa and studied at the Alle School of Fine Arts and Design. He previously practiced as a textile designer. Dawit has been included in various exhibitions in London, Addis Ababa, Kenya, and Malta.

DESTA HAGOS
Desta’s childhood hobby of watching the moon at night with her father, who was a gardener and a music lover, made her experience the joy of taking care of the flowers.
She was born in 1953 in Tigray, northern Ethiopia, and studied under the mentorship of the pioneering and well-known Addis Ababa Art School teachers. She was raised, in particular, under the tutelage of the renowned modern Ethiopian painter and poet Gebre Kristos, who had a significant influence on her paintings, making her one of the few Ethiopian pioneer female artists who dedicated her entire life to art. More importantly, her relationship with the internationally renowned Ethiopian modern artist Gebre Kristos was not only as a student and teacher, but also as a close friend, professional, and father. Desta speaks highly of Gebre Kristos, who gave her his personal and professional tools when he left the country he loved and immigrated to a foreign country, and she still especially treasures tools. From this, it is not difficult to understand that all is kept in her sharp memory, especially in her happiest eyes.
With the help of her former French high school teacher, her painting was sent to compete in the Shankar International Children’s Art Competition organized by the Indian Foundation in 1964. Along with her, a fellow Ethiopian participant, painter, and graphic artist Tulu Guya, was named the winner. Right after she joined the 9th grade, Princess Hirut Desta discovered Desta’s inborn talent for drawing. This paved the way for Desta to study at the Addis Ababa Fine Art School, which was established in 1957 by the well-known modern painter and art educator Alefelege Selam.
The Creative Art Center, which was established in 1963 at the former Haile Selassie I University and is now part of the current Addis Ababa University, was an active and vibrant artistic platform. Different artistic events, such as theater, poetry, music, etc., were performed and attended by prominent Ethiopian modern creative artists such as Gebre Kristos, Behailu Girma, Tsagaye Gebremedhin, and others with great artistic talent and caliber. Desta made attending these types of events her much-loved routine every Saturday. Working tirelessly in the studios became Desta’s habit. This hard work paid off when the university gave her the privilege to participate in the first young painters’ group exhibition that was held at the Creative Center. The event received wide media coverage at the time.
She was the only woman among the women who studied with her to successfully complete her studies and receive a diploma from the Addis Ababa School of Fine Arts in 1969. After getting a grant to study abroad, she earned a bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts from California Lutheran University in 1973. She is diligent in her career and is known for her work in the field of public relations, serving as the head of the Department of the Ethiopian Tourism Trading Enterprise. In addition to leaving her mark on the scene of Ethiopian painting, Desta has become a symbol of strength for female painters who have followed in her footsteps.
Desta, in her long artistic practice and experience since 1970, has participated in different private and group exhibitions in Ethiopia and abroad, and her well-experienced visual art has received national and international recognition. Recently, she was bestowed the title of Laureate Artist by the current prime minister of Ethiopia. In a nutshell, Desta is widely regarded as Ethiopia’s most prominent modern and contemporary female artist.

Trained at the Alle School of Fine Arts and Design (Addis Ababa University), Dagim’s research-driven practice merges conceptual rigor with formal experimentation. His MFA thesis, The Gambits (2023), exemplifies this approach, deconstructing contemporary Ethiopian realities through layered visual strategies that juxtapose daily life with fragmented urban materiality. The body of work serves as a meditation on cultural metamorphosis, framed through the tactical lens of chess and game theory.
As a curator, Dagim champions printmaking and interdisciplinary practices as sites of archival resistance. His debut project, Birhanu Manaye: Woven Memories (2025, The Space Ethiopia Gallery), reimagined printmaking as a dynamic medium for preserving heritage, fostering dialogue between erasure and reclamation. His scholarly contributions, including "Curating Against the Odds: The Struggle to Sustain Ethiopia’s Art Ecosystem" (Curatorial Ethics Network, 2025) and "Bisrat Shibabaw" (Africanah.org, 2024), reflect his commitment to art as a tool for historiographic repair, centering marginalized voices in postcolonial discourse.

Daniel Aklilu
Daniel is from the capital city of Addis Ababa located in Ethiopia. Spectacular sceneries, adventure, and warm welcomes are just a few things that await you here. Many are drawn to the smells of the country’s culinary excellence and coffee brewing – which historically happened here first. The panorama of the region is lush and perfect for those that are attracted to mountainous landscapes. Moreover, the Simien Mountains national park is home to some of the world’s rarest breeds of monkeys and wolves.
While working towards his post graduate degrees in Sculpture and Fine Arts he discovered his signature style. Through what he perceives as the disorders, crowds, and gaps in living standards within society Daniel has found a closeness between each area that we share that he looks to capture in his works. Highlighting what may be considered as a miscommunication and misunderstanding between humanity in areas like language, culture and religion Daniel identifies the cause for barriers and conflict, which in some cases lead to greater consequences like violence and war.
In his own words: “Art and artists like myself represent a few among many in the world that can overcome differences, mostly because we use something that each of us share – the sense of sight. Whether through a painting, sculpture, photography or visual performance; anyone can form an opinion or engage with an artwork based on its appearance. I believe this sentiment is a perfect example of how we may see the same thing but appreciate it in different ways with no right or wrong conclusion. For this reason, this is what attracted me to art and design in the first place. As an artist, through my works I look to reshape the paradigm from what’s “right and wrong” to what’s “right and right”.
