Surafel Amare

born in 1987 in South Gondar, Ethiopia, is a contemporary visual artist based in Addis Ababa. His work explores the intersection of modernity, mechanization, and electronic mediation, questioning the ways in which contemporary life shapes human perception and interaction.
Amare earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Art from Addis Ababa University's Alle School of Fine Arts and Design in 2010. Since then, he has developed a distinctive artistic practice that delves into themes of temporality, consumerism, choice, redundancy, and rhythm. His work often reveals hidden aspects of everyday life, challenging viewers to reconsider their relationship with reality.
Throughout his career, Amare has exhibited in both solo and group exhibitions, contributing to Ethiopia's growing contemporary art scene. His first solo exhibition was held in Addis Ababa in 2015. He has also participated in significant group shows in Ethiopia and Kenya, including Addis Contemporary at Circle Art Gallery in Nairobi, which featured a selection of leading Ethiopian artists. His work has been recognized for its thought-provoking engagement with the complexities of modern existence.
Amare continues to push artistic boundaries through his dynamic approach to visual storytelling. His practice remains deeply rooted in Ethiopian cultural contexts while engaging with global contemporary art discourses.
