Born in 1998 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Mikiyas Sintayehu is a contemporary visual artist whose work delves into the intersection of technology and human emotions. His practice is marked by a deep exploration of the psychological and emotional landscape of Generation Z, a theme he navigates through vibrant colors, layered textures, and dynamic compositions. By capturing spontaneous moments and raw expressions, Mikiyas creates works that evoke a sense of contemplation, empathy, and connection.
Mikiyas pursued his artistic education at the Alle School of Fine Arts and Design (ASFAD) at Addis Ababa University, where he graduated in 2023 with a Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Visual Arts. His time at ASFAD allowed him to refine his artistic language, blending traditional techniques with contemporary approaches to visual storytelling. His ability to translate emotion into visual form has led to a series of solo and group exhibitions, establishing him as a significant voice in the Ethiopian art scene.
His solo exhibitions include Odyssey (2024, Artawi Gallery), Escape (2023, Social), and Reflections (2022, Atmosphere Gallery), each of which presents a distinct phase in his evolving artistic narrative. Through these works, he continues to investigate the ways in which technology mediates human relationships and experiences. In addition to his solo shows, Mikiyas has participated in several group exhibitions, such as Cube (2023, Addis Cultural Space), Impression of Time (2023, Alliance Éthio-Française Gallery), and Faces (2021, Hyatt Regency Hotel), demonstrating his ability to engage with broader artistic dialogues.
Beyond his painting career, Mikiyas has expanded his creative practice into other visual disciplines. He has worked as an Art Director and Graphic Designer at Gofere, where he engaged with commercial and conceptual design, further enhancing his understanding of visual communication. Additionally, his experience as a photographer and video editor has allowed him to explore different mediums, reinforcing his interest in the fluid relationship between digital media and fine art.
Mikiyas Sintayehu’s work stands at the crossroads of personal expression and collective experience, offering a compelling reflection on the emotional and technological realities of contemporary life. As he continues to evolve as an artist, his practice remains a powerful lens through which viewers can engage with the shifting dynamics of modern identity, connection, and self-perception.
