1976

Robel Berhane , born in 1976 in Addis Ababa, began studying art at Yekatit 12 High School in 1987, specializing in graphic arts. He enrolled at the School of Fine Arts and Design at Addis Ababa University, and obtained a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1995. From then on, Robel set up his own business and worked extensively, responding to numerous commissions from institutions. He worked in different styles, experimenting with techniques, in search of his own visual vocabulary. Heavily influenced by his teachers in traditional Ethiopian art techniques, he gradually managed to invent his own language, between geometric abstraction and symbolic figuration. His first solo exhibitions in the early 2000s caused a sensation in Addis Ababa. He was immediately considered by critics as one of the most gifted artists of his generation, and his fame soon extended beyond the borders of Ethiopia. In 2012, the National Museum of Ethiopia hosted his first solo exhibition entitled “Traces”.
