Eyob Kitaba

Eyob Kitaba is a multimedia artist from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, whose work delves into themes of urbanization and development within his city. He frequently incorporates colors like yellow and green, commonly used by the Ethiopian government to demarcate construction zones, symbolizing the nation's emphasis on progress. Additionally, Eyob utilizes found objects such as door handles and corrugated iron sheets, painting portraits upon them to reflect the evolving urban landscape.
In February 2016, Eyob participated in a six-week residency at 32° East | Ugandan Arts Trust in Kampala, Uganda. His time there coincided with the buildup to the 2016 presidential elections, immersing him in the city's political fervor. This experience inspired his installation titled "Chess," which amalgamates elements like a boda boda helmet, a broken chair, a ladder, and corrugated iron sheets into a door-sized chessboard. The piece serves as a commentary on political dynamics and the contestation of space.
Eyob's artistic endeavors aim to capture the narratives of city residents, reflecting on the changes and challenges they face. By altering the shapes and colors of materials like corrugated sheets, he seeks to convey stories that transcend time and space, illustrating the fate of his city in contrast with others.
