Yared Nigussu is an internationally acclaimed Ethiopian-Canadian painter known for his expressive and dynamic portraiture. Born and raised in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, he graduated in 2005 from Addis Ababa University of Fine Arts and Design with a degree in Art and Education, specializing in painting. His artistic journey took him to France on a scholarship, where he further honed his craft and immersed himself in European artistic traditions.
Early in his career, Yared was deeply influenced by the work of Amedeo Modigliani, particularly the Italian painter’s belief that "When I know your soul, I will paint your eyes." This philosophy continues to resonate in Yared’s work, as he draws inspiration from the human face, believing that "eyes can hide a lot of stories, and that is an infinite source of inspiration for me."
Yared’s signature style fuses bold, gestural brushstrokes with mixed media, rendered in a rich, opulent palette. His paintings are visually arresting, with dripped paint, layered textures, and vibrant hues that create an immersive and emotive experience. His portraits transcend mere representation, inviting viewers to engage with the deeper narratives embedded within his subjects.
In 2009, Yared relocated to Vancouver, Canada, where he found new inspiration in the city’s energy, light, and urban landscape. His talent and dynamic approach to painting gained widespread recognition when he won Canada’s prestigious National Art Battle live competition for three consecutive years (2011–2014). He has also received the 2015 Sage Award for Social Acceptance and Great Excellence and the 2015 Bikila Professional Excellence Award.
Yared Nigussu’s work is collected and exhibited internationally, earning him a prominent place in the contemporary art world. In 2018, he launched ART LAB - STUDIO in Vancouver, a creative hub dedicated to fostering artistic dialogue and promoting cultural exchange.
