Visual Artist
Year:
Dawit Tamrat is Ethiopian visual artist based in Addis Ababa. He graduated from the Department of Printmaking at the Alle School of Fine Arts and Design, Addis Ababa University. His work explores themes of identity, belonging, and displacement, often using the motif of houses as a metaphor for personal and societal constructs. Through layered compositions and intricate textures, he examines the evolving landscape of urban life, reflecting on the emotional weight of home, memory, and the shifting nature of place.
Dawit employs various techniques, including woodcut, image transfer, and acrylic painting, to create intricate visual narratives that reflect both individual experiences and collective histories. His approach to art is deeply rooted in materiality, with a focus on textures and surfaces that evoke a sense of time, transformation, and impermanence.
He has exhibited his work in solo and group exhibitions, including a notable solo show at Fendika Gallery in 2024, where he engaged audiences with his introspective and thought-provoking pieces. His work has gained recognition for its ability to challenge societal norms and inspire dialogue about migration, space, and identity.
