Alemayehu "Alex" Tefera is an Ethiopian cartoonist renowned for his satirical illustrations that shed light on political and social issues in Ethiopia. Born in Addis Ababa, he earned his first degree from Addis Ababa University's Art School. He later moved to London, where he pursued a master's degree and has resided for over two decades.
Tefera's work is characterized by simple comic sketches that reflect critical observations and a keen sense of humor. Using ink and pencil, he crafts satires that mock local politicians, critique polarized ethnic politics, address social blemishes, and comment on historical events and geopolitical threats. His cartoons aim to provoke thought and initiate conversations, capturing true emotional experiences to enhance their impact.
In June 2021, Tefera held an exhibition titled "Funtezya" at the Alliance Ethio-Française in Addis Ababa. This exhibition showcased his satirical cartoons, highlighting his ability to use humor to address serious topics and engage viewers in critical discourse.
Tefera's unique approach to art, blending satire with critical social commentary, has made him a notable figure in contemporary Ethiopian art. His work continues to resonate with audiences, offering insightful perspectives on the complexities of Ethiopian society and politics.
