Fetelework Tadesse

Fetlework Tadesse is a painter and sculptor living and working in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. She holds a Diploma in Fine Arts specializing in sculpture from Entoto Technical and Vocational Training College as well as a Bachelor’s Degree in Painting from the Alle School of Fine Arts and Design.

Fetlework creates an artistic language inspired by finding answers through her visual expressions. She poses the human figure in her works as lifeless, in death, as imitators and replicas of humans, not in contrast to our truer existence. She is trying to find answers to questions involving the who, when, and how. And how these questions are related to society, culture, and religion. Her compositions are uncertain, and she examines and denies the reality that she has accepted to live with. Listening to her curiosities sounds like a deep and intense desire to discover and explore the uncertain once it is recognized. The pursuit should be fun and pleasurable, not attached to the end goal. Her series “Flesh Palette” and “Purging Dummies” prove how she paves the way toward greater personal expression.

Tadesse has exhibited widely in Ethiopia in various group exhibitions since 2004, and in 2024, had her first solo exhibition, “Living dummies” at Findika Cultural Center, Addis Ababa, and showed at the Investec Cape Town Art Fair.
